Upgrades and Broken Parts
To better deal with the massive, massive files we’ve been generating in a new photographer workflow video series we’re creating on a Canon 7D, (we shot more than 80GB of video on one day of a two day shoot and have been editing that in a number of programs), we just bought some RAM to upgrade our Mac Pro video production machine. We knew that some day we’d need more than the 16GB of RAM we had it stocked with, but I don’t think I anticipated having a machine with 24GB of RAM in it as it was previoulsly mainly used for Aperture work. Any more memory in the box and we’re going to have to start pulling older stacks of 1GB DIMMS and replace them with larger bits of RAM, we’ve filled all the slots.
Meanwhile, I just came back from San Diego where I was documenting wedding photographer Sara France and master shooter Joe McNally as they worked on a few shoots .We lugged along for on-location editing iMac (I’ve decided we should hold out for the next speed bump of the 17" MacBook Pros before we should get some new location laptops) and I’d like to take a moment to thank TSA and our air carrier for breaking the glass screen. Do you know how hard you have to drop an iMac that’s in the Apple-designed foam packaging in order to break the screen? Pretty…frigging…hard.
So thanks to the fine hard-working folks of San Diego and Newark Airports (and the TSA guys who opened our box from the bottom) for the nice giant crack along the surface. Luckily it’ snot terribly distracting when you’re looking straight on so we’ll continue to use the machine for our webcasts, it just will retire from road trips.
